Compass Rose was Jennifer's first seamless repeating pattern — and the design that unlocked everything that followed.
Repeating arches had been at the center of her work since before 2011. It was natural, then, that arches would become the framework she'd reach for when learning to translate her hand-drawn aesthetic into digital drawing, and later, repeating pattern design. The challenge was technical: her style is rooted in imperfect, organic mark-making, and seamless patterns demand that edges connect. After many attempts, and a session with graph paper to sketch out the logic, she found her answer: a containing shape that eliminated the need for the pattern edge to connect at all.
With that, Compass Rose came together. The undulating rhythm of the fish scale repeat creates a quiet illusion of depth and movement. At the center of each repeat, a radiating form emerges — recalling the compass roses of old maps, those navigational marks that can look, depending on how you see them, like a star or a flower.
