An artist’s journey to pattern design

Jennifer Hunold, the creative mind behind Memory & Mark, is a contemporary artist whose drawings, paintings, and embroideries have been exhibited across the U.S.

With a professional studio practice spanning over two decades, Jennifer’s entrée into surface pattern design evolved naturally from her artwork and a lifetime of admiring organic and human-made patterns.

Roots in repetition

Throughout her life, Jennifer found herself tracing forms, lines, and repetitions.

Her eyes journeyed over wallpapers that adorned her home: trains in the hallway, 60s floral in the playroom, and cartoony turtles in her bedroom.

She pieced apart geometric radiator covers, organic wood grain, and linoleum and tile floors.

Mindlessly, her gaze caressed power lines and undulating limbs of trees as the car sped past.

These elements would become the visual bookends to memories in her life. Her artist training added influences from color theorists like Albers, Kandinsky, and Klee, and abstractionists like Agnes Martin and Helen Frankenthaler. Folk arts and vintage board games, decorative expression worldwide, art nouveau, and the pattern and decoration movement rounded out her inspirations.

From studio to surface

Jennifer is known for vibrant color and thousands of marks that build her images. Her highly detailed and intricate works manifested in multiple projects, from floor plans of dream homes to geometric abstractions to imagined landscapes and philosophies on civility.

Her paintings evolved into embroidery, which became drawings, and then moved into digital works.

Jennifer’s style is a hybrid of her drawn and sewn work. Small, repeated lines build into something bigger and look hand-drawn no matter the medium.

After years of colleagues, friends, and strangers remarking that her work would make beautiful wallpaper, tiles, and textiles, Jennifer translated her detailed aesthetic to surface design. She continues her studio practice, the symbols, motifs, and color progressions informing her designs.

The effect is something truly original and unique in the surface design space.

  • Because of the detailed, hand-drawn nature of our designs, we do not recommend any material that has a substantial texture. For example, we do not recommend grasscloth wallpaper because the fine lines are lost in the texture.

Prior to an order, we recommend purchasing a swatch. Spoonflower makes this easy for fabric and wallpaper.

  • Spoonflower offers a wide range of options on their site. Depending on your application, some substrates will be better than others. We recommend reviewing Spoonflower’s suggestions when selecting a material, with consideration to your application and overall budget. Please keep in mind:

    • White is not printed. The cloth or wallpaper will be the white for the image, which means it may change depending on material. Some whites are brighter whereas some are creamy.

    • Textures will change how the marks appear. More visible textures may add more disruption to our patterns.

    • Colors may change across different material types.

We strongly recommend purchasing swatches for all materials you intend to order to ensure the color and pattern are to your liking.

  • Spoonflower has a number of online resources to guide your purchase. Below is general information to help find your preferred material. Any information on the Spoonflower website will override the guide provided here.

  • For most of our patterns, you will see that the marks aren’t solid/flat. They have a texture. This is on purpose. In a physical space, marks made with charcoal or colored pencil (to name a few) on paper tend to be irregular in their coverage of the surface. Our work is made to mimic the mark-making quality of this physical material.

  • Our designs are original creations made by hand. Our work is created using digital design applications such as Procreate and Affinity Design.

  • Original artwork is available for inquiry and purchase through JenniferHunold.com. Pieces listed as “private collection” have sold and are no longer available. Please inquire through that site for purchase requests.
